Program Assistants

Make a Difference On and Off the Ice

Our Program Assistants (PAs) are an important part of creating a fun, welcoming and organized CanSkate experience. PAs are typically current or former skaters who have a strong foundation in skating and enjoy helping younger skaters learn and build confidence.

Program Assistants work alongside our coaches to support skaters throughout the session. While PAs do not replace the role of a certified coach or teach the program independently, they provide valuable assistance that helps keep skaters engaged, moving and having fun.

Program Assistants must be registered members of Skate Canada and complete the required training before participating in sessions.

What Does a Program Assistant Do?

PAs can take on a variety of responsibilities during a CanSkate session, including:

Helping with Activities

Assist coaches with warm-ups, cool-downs, circuits, games and other activities throughout the session.

Setting Up the Ice

Help place and collect pylons, signs and other equipment needed for different drills and activities.

Supporting Skater Groups

Help skaters understand where they need to go during rotations and assist groups as they move between activities.

Demonstrating Skills

Show skaters basic movements and skills when directed by the coach, helping them understand what they are being asked to do.

Helping Keep Things Organized

Assist coaches with tasks such as attendance, timing activities and other session-related responsibilities.

Encouraging Our Skaters

One of the most important PA responsibilities is simply being a positive presence on the ice. Cheer skaters on, celebrate their progress and help them feel confident when they're learning something new.

Helping When Someone Needs Extra Support

Every skater learns differently. PAs help provide additional encouragement or assistance to skaters who may need a little extra help during a session.

Being a Great Program Assistant

Being a PA is about more than just helping with drills. PAs are role models for our younger skaters and play an important part in creating a positive club environment.

Our PAs Should:

  • Be positive, enthusiastic and encouraging
  • Treat every skater with patience and respect
  • Communicate clearly and appropriately
  • Be dependable and arrive prepared and on time
  • Work cooperatively with coaches and other PAs
  • Be attentive to what is happening on the ice
  • Encourage skaters to keep trying, even when something is difficult
  • Help create an environment where everyone feels welcome
  • Set a good example for younger skaters
  • Keep skaters active and engaged throughout the session

On-Ice Expectations

While you're volunteering as a Program Assistant, your focus should be on supporting the skaters and coaching team.

Stay Engaged

PAs should remain actively involved in the session rather than using the ice time for their own skating practice.

Connect With Your Skaters

Learning skaters' names and speaking with them at their level can help build trust and make them feel more comfortable.

Follow Your Coach's Direction

The coach is responsible for leading the session. Check in regularly so you know what activities are happening and how you can best assist.

Put Safety First

Always be aware of the skaters and your surroundings. If you notice a safety concern or a skater needs help, notify the coach and provide assistance as appropriate.

Keep It Positive

A smile, high five or simple “Great job!” can make a huge difference to a young skater. Celebrate effort and progress, not just perfect execution.

What Makes a Great PA?

We're looking for Program Assistants who are:

PatientReliableFriendlyEnthusiastic
ResponsibleOrganizedSupportiveTeam Players

You don't have to know everything! A willingness to learn, help others and be a positive role model is just as important as skating ability.

Training & Development

Program Assistants are required to complete the training provided by Stonewall Skating Club/Skate Canada before taking on their role. Additional training may be required throughout the season to ensure PAs are familiar with current expectations, procedures and safety practices.

Our goal is to make sure every PA feels prepared and confident when they step onto the ice.

Why Become a Program Assistant?

Being a PA is a great way to give back to the skating community while gaining valuable experience.

You'll have the opportunity to:

  • Develop leadership and communication skills
  • Build confidence working with children
  • Learn how to work as part of a team
  • Gain experience taking on responsibility
  • Strengthen your organization and time-management skills
  • Become a positive role model for younger skaters
  • Give back to the club that helped you develop as a skater

And perhaps most importantly, you'll get to experience the excitement of watching a young skater land a skill for the first time and knowing you helped them get there. ❤️
